Hail Hail

I'm listening to the song off No Code three times in a row, which I've never done, and the result is more questions than answers. First off, Eddie sounded tired then. There's a lot of communication that maybe his voice at this time (2006-2007) is becoming jagged due to the cigarette smoking. I think he can still amaze any naysayer. However, this is the first time I realized he really had to push it back then for this particular song for this particular album at that particular time. There is a struggle in the delivery, he really sounded tired during the recording.

I also think that his tirednes resulted in some confusing lines. This song is about a love affair, long story short. It can't be about us against the world, or the world against us, or me and you and a dog named boo, this is about one person putting thoughts to words and expressing his feelings/thoughts. I guess not really expressing feelings as one point of the song suggests the time is past expression of feelings and the relationship has only become something to discuss, something cerebral, a book club discussion. If Eddie meant for this song to mean that then he did a great job with the lyrics.

The most confusing lines are:

It's egg rolling thick and heavy
All the past you carry
Oh, I could be new... you underestimate me

What? Is this suppose to suggest the topic of a child within the relationship past/present or is the relationship suppose to be rebirthed? Is the past becoming a new subject within the relationship, and the partners have to re-evaluate how they work through situations, and this is a new one they have to work through.?
